Heartbleed Bug - What You Need To KnowApril 11, 2014
You may have heard about the Heartbleed Bug, a serious vulnerability in the popular OpenSSL cryptographic software library. The Heartbleed Bug essentially allows anyone on the internet to read the memory of the systems protected by the vulnerable versions of the OpenSSL software. Attackers can "eavesdrop" on your communications, steal data directly from the services and users and to impersonate services and users - which puts you at risk. Here is what you need to know:
The Good News: Rest assured that Highmark Federal Credit Union's online services are not vulnerable to the Heartbleed Bug and our online services remain safe and secure. Its Me 24/7 Online Banking security features are heavily encrypted with data being stored behind powerful firewalls.
The Bad News: Since OpenSSL is the most popular open source cryptographic library and TLS implementation used to encrypt traffic on the internet, you are likely to be affected either directly or indirectly.
We recommend that you learn more about this internet Bug and review the sites that were affected to determine what precautions you should take. To learn more about this internet bug and the websites that have been affected by it, click on the following link: http://www.cnet.com/news/how-to-protect-yourself-from-the-heartbleed-bug/
Highmark Federal Credit Union recommends that you keep a close eye on all of your electronic accounts, keep current with your virus/software protection, utilize strong passwords that include capital/lowercase letters, numbers and special characters, and remember that reputable companies you already have a relationship with will NEVER ask you for your personal information via an email.
