Sender & Content Red Flags

  • Suspicious sender address: Check that the actual email address, not just the display name, is legitimate. Scammers often slightly alter domain names (e.g., amazan.com instead of amazon.com).
  • Generic greetings: Legitimate companies typically address you by name. A generic greeting like "Dear Customer" can signal a phishing attempt.
  • Urgent or threatening language: Look for urgent calls to action (e.g., "ACT NOW!") or threats of negative consequences (e.g., account suspension) to create panic and bypass critical thinking.
  • Too good to be true offers: Be suspicious of emails offering amazing deals, unexpected refunds, or other rewards.
  • Poor grammar and spelling: While some phishing emails have improved, many still contain mistakes or awkward phrasing that legitimate companies would not send.
  • Unexpected attachments: Be very cautious of unsolicited attachments, especially those with unusual file types, as they can contain malware.
  • Requests for sensitive information: Legitimate companies will rarely ask for passwords, login credentials, or full financial details via email.

How to Verify Suspicious Emails

  • Hover over links: Before clicking, move your mouse cursor over any links to see the true destination URL.
  • Check logos and branding: While scammers may copy logos, inconsistencies in branding can sometimes be a giveaway.
  • Contact the organization directly: If an email seems suspicious, contact the organization's known customer service line or website directly to confirm the message.
  • Don't click or reply: Never click on links or reply to emails that raise suspicions.
  • Report the email: Use your email client's "report spam" or "report phishing" button to protect yourself and other users.
